Local sports roundup: KM rocks Burns in baseball action

Baseball

Kings Mountain 12, Burns 2 — Kings Mountain showed little to no mercy to Burns in their 12-2 drubbing of the Bulldogs at Lancaster Field Monday night.  The Mountaineers (3-0) gave Brian Brown his first varsity start on the mound and it paid dividends. The lefty had six strikeouts in the win, allowing just four hits in a complete-game effort.

The KM junior also hit a standup double that sent first baseman Mitchell Cloninger home for Kings Mountain’s first run of the ballgame in the second inning. That inning turned out to be the ugliest for Burns as the Mountaineers’ bats got hot and finished with six runs.

Kings Mountain went through their entire batting order in the second with hits from Brown, third baseman Michael Grooms, shortstop Cody Austin and designated hitter Brandon Gantt consecutively.

Dallas Conner had a solo home run in the sixth inning with Dylan Smith hitting a two-RBI single. Smith (three RBI), Austin and Gantt (two RBI) all finished with four hits for the Mountaineers, while Chad Davis was 3 for 4.
Burns (1-2) will seek revenge Wednesday night as the teams face off again in Lawndale.
