Trinity defensive coordinator Tippett takes over for Lloyd

Jul 19, 2007 3:17 pm

East Gaston announced Eric Tippett as its head football coach Tuesday, concluding a quick search to replace Greg Lloyd.

Tippett comes to East Gaston from Trinity High School in Randolph County, where he was defensive coordinator. The East Gaston job will be his first as head coach.

“I just feel like he will be the right man for the job,” said East Gaston athletic director Ken Howell, who cited his character, moral outlook, football knowledge and organization as qualities that stood out.

The Warriors needed only 10 days to find a replacement for Lloyd, who left June 1 to take the Kings Mountain job. The school received 40 applicants and interviewed six candidates.

Tippett accepted the job Monday and met the existing East Gaston staff Tuesday.

“I just feel like the right fellow fell in our lap and there was no sense in waiting,” Howell said.

Tippett will now begin the process of moving his family from Winston-Salem to the Mount Holly area. He has a wife and one daughter.

Lloyd led East Gaston to a share of the Big South 3A/4A Conference championship, two playoff wins and an 11-3 record last season. He compiled a two-year record of 16-9 before replacing the fired Dave Farquharson at Kings Mountain.
