Last year's finalists meet again

May 7, 2008 11:38 pm

MOUNT HOLLY - The Crest and East Gaston girls wouldn't have it any other way.

As last year's finalists square off for the Big South 3A/4A Conference softball tournament title again today, there's no other team they'd rather be facing.

"We always love playing Crest because it's just a good game, good competition," East Gaston third baseman Cameron Sealey said. "It's going to be another exciting one. Last year was exciting and we'll see what happens this year."

The Chargers and Warriors easily won their semifinals Wednesday to set up a rematch of last year's championship, won by East Gaston.

Second-seeded Crest beat third-seeded North Gaston 9-3 in the first semifinal before top-seeded and regular-season champion East Gaston dispatched fourth-seeded Ashbrook 11-3.

First pitch today is scheduled for 6 p.m. at East Gaston.

Crest (17-7) will be looking for its first win this season against East Gaston (19-3), which won the regular-season meetings 2-0 and 6-3. Last year, it was East Gaston that lost both regular-season meetings but prevailed in the tournament championship, 3-2.

"I think both of our teams match up evenly," Crest coach Greg Earl said. "We just have to play solid defense against them because they don't make many mistakes."

Crest 9, North Gaston 3 - In the first semifinal, Crest jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.

The Chargers combined for eight runs on nine hits in the first two innings to take control.

Freshman catcher Amanda Baker went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a double. Kendyl McWhirter, Bailey Smith and Gracie Pitchford added two hits each, with McWhirter starting the game with a double and Pitchford driving in two runs.

Melissa Hunter and Bailey Smith combined to pitch a three-hitter. Hunter, a senior left-hander, struck out three batters and surrendered one unearned run on one hit in the first three innings. Smith took it from there, striking out four the rest of the way.

Hunter is one of three seniors on the team, along with left fielder Erin McWhirter and first baseman Sarah Dover.

"We've been with the team for four years and we want to go out big," Hunter said.

Krystal Bandy went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs and pitched three innings of relief for North Gaston (12-9), which scored two of its runs in the seventh.

"I just think we were too anxious to play and we rushed the ball when we shouldn't," Bandy said.

East Gaston 11, Ashbrook 3 - The only Big South team to beat East Gaston this season couldn't do it again as the Warriors scored in every inning to win easily.

Cameron Sealey went 4-for-4 with an RBI, two runs and a double and Megan Soots went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run to lead a 16-hit outing.

Tameron Sealey added three runs two hits, including an RBI triple, while Michelle Primm and Blair Collier also had two hits for the Warriors.

Primm, the senior enjoying a huge season, pitched the win, scattering five hits while striking out seven. The defense behind her turned in a another error-free gem.

"They've got good pitching, they play excellent defense and they can sock it around a little bit," Ashbrook coach Rex "Gabby" Carnes said. "They put the pressure on us tonight and we folded a couple of times. They're just tough."

Heather Carnes, Allie Short and Molly Donaldson drove in the runs for Ashbrook (14-10). Andreya O'Brien and Short had a double and a run each and Carnes scored the other run.

concerned dont tell carson to get a life you are the one who started all this conversation anyways and i dont know who you have been talking to but NOGA probably played their best game this year against EG and they still got ten-run-ruled. so i think if you believe you can win at softball then you should go try and coach. and you might want to try some spell and grammar check on yours if you care that much about it because i see plenty of errors. but then again when has anyone from dallas ever really cared about education or learning anyways?

Ok thats what i wanted to know and yea bias plays a large role in who should be good but the game I saw NG play they were good but not the best. The good thing for them however, both crest and EG are 4A so NG really doesnt have to compete with those teams.

Who told me was several of the coaches on the really large staff for a girl's softball team. I even think they have a guy who runs a grill helping. He probably needs to stay at the grill because he looks like he does a better job there than he did at the field. Another one of the coaches is a players' dad? Come on folks. How smart is that over there in Dallas. Volunteer coaches who have daughters on the team? You are asking for problems and that is exactly what you got. Does the head coach feel she is so weak that she needs to have a bunch of people to help her so she can blame them. I know the family and she will not accept any of the blame and all of the credit.

you still ignored the whole point of your original concern. Who told you NG would be good? thats all I wanted to know.

Come on Carson. It is surprisingly. Good thing you take pictures. You cannot write! Just stop. You think he is good and I do not. Let's agree to disagree and go take some more pictures.

Maybe you should check out his website and see that there are many more types of photos he takes than NG events as well and surprinsingly they have guys in them. I know thats tough for you to believe but its true.

I take pictures for my friends on the team and their parents so they can watch the games more. How is that being obsessed with them? So he takes 300 pictures of the football team and 50 pictures of the cheerleaders and he has a problem? And you have not even addressed the whole originality of your comment. Who told you NG would be good enough at softball to win the conference?

It is truly a good job that you and that funny guy are photographers because you certainly cannot spell. Too bad you cannot count on spellcheck to help you. Appreciate would the appropriate way to pronoun and spell it! And, to further concern you, the only reason he attends the other sporting events is to take pictures of the cheerleaders of those sports. Get a life along with him because I have watched him for years and he has a problem.

So he has an obsession with young girls? Last time I checked he took pictures of football, basketball, and many other sports at NG. Although I go to EG I respect his work and as a fellow photogrpaher apriciate the work he does to help capture memories of many different sporting events and activities at NOGA. As far as I know NG was never in the talk of winning a conference championship. EG split the title with Crest last year and didnt lose any seniors so any talk of conference championships for NG was coming out of Dallas and Dallas alone.

Seemed to have hit a nerve with you jj. The concern I have with you is your obsession with taking pictures of young girls. You wouldn't know anything about whether or not they are hitting or not. How many baseball games did you play at Noga?

Was this not the year that noga was supposed to compete for the conference championship? This is getting ridiculous or is it alright to be mediocre with very good talent?
