Kings Mountain rallies to beat Hickory
KINGS MOUNTAIN — The Kings Mountain varsity baseball team picked up a huge non-conference win over one of the top 3A teams in the state at Lancaster Field Friday, rallying to defeat Hickory, 14-11.
Junior lefthander Brian Brown led the Mountaineers attack, going 4-for-4 including a three-run homer to awaken the Mountaineer after a 6-0 first-inning hole. Mitchell Cloninger added three hits and a home run and Chris Allen supplied a home run and a double.
Allen also responded from a rough first inning to throw a complete game and pick up the win, scattering just three runs to a potent Hickory attack the rest of the way.
“(Hickory) is good and their pitching’s great,” KM coach Eric King said. “Our guys kinda hit rock bottom (Thursday in a loss to Shelby) and we knew we were better than what we’d been showing. It’s not often you spot someone six runs in the first and win, though.”
Despite the whopping 25 combined runs that came across the plate, the game took only 100 minutes to complete.
Kings Mountain (5-2), which snapped a two-game losing skid, hosts Big South league foe Hunter Huss on Tuesday.
