Local sports roundup: Ironmen down West Lincoln in conference opener

Cherryville 7, West Lincoln 3 — Blake Mosteller went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Steven Shealy went 1-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs for Cherryville (2-2, 1-0) in the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A Conference opener for both teams Monday. Winning pitcher Dylan Hastings struck out 10, walked three and scattered four hits in five innings. Trey Drewery (0-1) started for West Lincoln (1-4, 0-1) but pitched only one inning. Cherryville visits Highland Tech today while West Lincoln plays host to Bessemer City.

Ashbrook 5, East Gaston 2 — Shannon Kay scored three goals while Brooke Kearney and Andrea Cuevas added goals in Monday’s win. Cuevas, Kayla Stowe and Mackenzie Bess had assists in the win. Ashbrook (2-3) hosts North Gaston Wednesday.
Forestview 5, Hunter Huss 0 — Alison Rodriguez had two goals while Mary Leslie Miller, Lindley Sytz and Ariel Ellis also scored in the win. Keepers Emily Lindsay, Hannah Baker and Coraleigh Watts shared the shutout in goal. The Jaguars (5-1) host Crest on Wednesday.
Varsity tennis
South Meck 7, Highland Tech 2 — Jon Alliss won in singles’ play while Alliss and Thomas Terrio won the Rams’ doubles match on Monday. Highland Tech (2-1) plays at Ashbrook on Wednesday.
JV soccer
Ashbrook 3, East Gaston 1 — Kady Grigg scored all three goals for the Green Wave. Giselle Hernandez had two assists for Ashbrook (1-0-1).
Golf
Forestview 295, Ashbrook 331, Crest 337, North Gaston 350, South Point 351, Hunter Huss 370, Kings Mountain 371 — At Gastonia Municipal Golf Course, James Chapman got medalist honors, shooting a 71 on Monday. Teammates Will Long and Taylor Dickson shot 74 while Sam Stout had a 76. Ashbrook’s James Black (76), Crest’s Caleb McFarland (78), Hunter Huss’ Ryan Strickland and Cody Jones (89), Kings Mountain’s Timmy Moore (79), North Gaston’s Brennan Hawkins (85) and South Point’s Gary Carrigan (85) led their teams on the day. The next Big South match for March 29 at Green Meadows.
Hole-in-one
Russ Sanders of Gastonia, 65, got his first ace on March 9 at par-3 Birkdale Golf Course in Huntersville. Sanders made the shot on the 124-yard No. 2 hole with a 7-iron. Trey Honeycutt and Rick Price witnessed the event.
