Local sports roundup: South Point bats heat up in softball win

Varsity softball
South Point 11, East Lincoln 2 — Katie Sneathen (3-for-6), Taylor Mahaffey (2-for-6), Jordan Wilson (2-for-4) and Alison Yarborough (2-for-4) led the team offensively while freshman Kristin McAndrews (1-0) threw a five-hitter in six innings. South Point (4-2) play at Hunter Huss tonight. Brittany Wayne (2-for3) led the Mustangs.

Lincoln Charter 15, North Hills Christian 4 - Taylor Wingate got her first win allowing four hits in the Lincoln Charter(7-0, 2-0) win. Wingate also went 3-3 at the plate with 3 doubles and 2 RBIs.  Haley Meza was 3-3 with a triple and 3 RBIs.  Kayleigh Mitchell added a double with 3 RBIs.  Jada Johnson, Victoria Morgan and Sarah Kenley also contributed with RBIs.
 

Hunter Huss 17, Shelby 5 (Wednesday) — Taylor Grigg pitched the win and went 3-for-4 from the plate while Dominique Brooks added three hits for the Huskies (2-5), who play host to South Point today.

North Lincoln 8, Bessemer City 3 (Wednesday) — Lauren Averitt went 2-for-3 with a run, an RBI and three stolen bases, Kaitlyn Thompson added two hits and Amanda Farabaugh pitched the win for North Lincoln (3-2, 2-0 SPC). Brittany Johnson, Ashley Jones, Miranda Barrett, Megan Phillips and Kayla Ellis had one hit each for Bessemer City.

Varsity baseball
Gaston Christian 10, Westminster Catawba 0 — Morgan Rohm (2-0) gave up just two hits in six innings while striking out 11 batters on Friday. Jacob Prescott (3-for-4, double, home run) and Samuel Dye (2-for-3, double) stood out while Matthew Denham and Aaron Henderson were both 1-for-2 with a double in the win. Gaston Christian (3-3) plays in the Forsyth Country Day Showcase with Woodbury Academy today and Statesville Christian on Saturday.

Dallas Tabernacle 19, Charlotte Victory Christian 9 — Winning pitcher Chad Mashburn helped himself at the plate with two singles and a double to lead Tabernacle. Joseph Rivera added a triple, two singles and three RBIs while Zach Stewart provided two hits for Tabernacle, which plays host to Lincoln Charter on March 29.

Cramerton Christian 16, Tri-City 10 — Josh Jenkins went 5-for-5 with three RBIs, Caleb Smith went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Cameron Barefield added two hits and an RBI and Nathaniel Richards pitched the win for Cramerton Christian (1-0), which plays Monday at Calvary.

Shelby 5, Kings Mountain 1 — Cody Alston pitched six innings for the Mountaineers (4-2, 0-1) and struck out four in Friday’s loss. He was also the only Kings Mountain player to score, hitting a triple after which Brandon Gantt sent him home with the second of three hits the Mountaineers had all night. Kings Mountain hosts Hickory tonight.

Forestview boys 93, South Point 87, East Lincoln 51, Hunter Huss 25 — At South Point, South Point won all four relays (9:29.88, 3,200-meter relay, 800m relay, 1:38.47; 400m relay, 49.94, 1600m relay, 3:50.15)

Tennis
Polk County 5, Highland Tech 4 — Jason Duarte and Chris Flannigan won in singles’ play. Both won in doubles with Bryan Williams and Bryson Beert also winning their match. Highland Tech (3-2) hosts Kings Mountain on Monday.

Gaston Day 7, Charlotte Catholic 2 — Gaston Day School swept the doubles for their first win of the season. With wins from eighth grader Porter Yelton, Torben Ebert, juniors Jeremy Worrell and Rob Hixson who won a tiebreaker at 13-11. Gaston Day went into the doubles with a 4-2 lead. First-year senior Guy Monogas highlighted the exhibition, winning his first exhibition match, 8-4, with seventh grader Preston Marisiddaiah.  


Soccer
East Gaston 9, Garinger 0 — Stephanie Aguilar scored one goal and assisted three others as East Gaston (5-2, 2-0 MEGA 7) remained undefeated in conference play. Crystal Ocasio and Kaylee Coleman scored two goals apiece while Kristen Calhoun had one goal and one assist for the Warriors, who travel to Charlotte Catholic on Tuesday. Madison Collier, sarah Patterson and Colleen Zatorski scored one goal each, Emily Casciani and Mikayla O’Meara recorded one assist each, and Collier and O’Meara shared the shutout in goal. 

Oakbrook Prep 3, Gaston Day School 1 (Thursday) -- Gaston Day’s lone goal was scored by Rosemary Dunning and assisted by Lauren Toole.
