Forestview set to host Gaston County Jamboree

GASTONIA - The Gaston County FCA Football Jamboree wasn't the easiest event to get off the ground.

But now that organizers have the first jamboree under their belt, they hope it's here to stay.

The second annual event is scheduled for Aug. 16 at Forestview High School beginning at 5 p.m. South Point hosted the inaugural jamboree last year after torrential rainfall wiped it out in 2005 and 2006.

"Hopefully it's just going to build each year," jamboree organizer Phil Cherry said. "At least we got something started and have some momentum now."

The jamboree will feature five scrimmages at one-hour intervals.

North Gaston and Kings Mountain will kick off the evening at 5 p.m. South Point will meet Vance at 6, Ashbrook will play East Mecklenburg at 7 and Hunter Huss will face Providence Day at 8 before the nightcap between Forestview and South Mecklenburg at 9.

East Gaston opted out of the jamboree this season, opening a spot for North Gaston, which did not participate last year.

Attendance last year was estimated at 2,000 for the late game, but the total for the full evening, although unknown, was believed to be much higher. Hot weather pushed the schedule back two hours, forcing South Point to open its practice field for one game so that two scrimmages could take place at once.

"(South Point athletic director) Scott Lee and (booster club president) Chip Rollins really did a great job last year," Cherry said. "All the Charlotte coaches that I talked with thoroughly enjoyed it because South Point did a great job from all aspects."
