Local sports roundup: BC holds off tough Red Raiders

Varsity baseball
Bessemer City 5, South Point 3 — Luke Kiser, Blake Lambert and Josh Alford led Bessemer City with two hits each. Seth Weekly got the win, working the first four innings. Clayton Johnson got the save for the Yellow Jackets (2-2), who host Hunter Huss today. Ryan Huneycutt had three hits for South Point, while Weston Lawing added two hits.

Forestview 6, East Lincoln 3 — Zach Daly had three hits, including a double and a home run, while Logan Craig (RBI) also had three hits. Riley Hovis and John McCuen had one double each. Josh Branch tossed a complete game, scattering seven hits with eight strikeouts. East Lincoln’s Jake Carter had three hits, including a home run. Clayton Dellinger took the loss for the Mustangs (3-2). Forestview (4-0) hosts Hunter Huss on March 16.

North Gaston 7, Newton-Conover 3 — Justin Parker (double, triple, 4 RBI) and Dustin Bridges (three hits) led the Wildcats (3-0). Henry Rundio got the win, pitching five innings with seven strikeouts. North Gaston hosts South Point on Tuesday.

Metrolina 6, Gaston Christian  4 — Ryan Doty (3-for-4, two doubles, RBI), Matthew Denim (2-for-3, HR) and Aaron Henderson (2-for-4, RBI) stood out in the loss. Gaston Christian (1-1) hosts Northside on Friday.

East Gaston 7, Hunter Huss 3 — Justin Williams (three hits, two RBIs) and Kevin Conn (two-run HR) led the Warrior offense and Ethan Frazier got the win on Tuesday. East Gaston (2-1) hosts South Point on Friday. Justin Blair had three hits while Brett Cullen picked up the loss for the Huskies.

Highland Tech 15, Waddell 10 — Heath Leagon pitched 5.1 innings, striking out 10 and giving up six hits with two walks. Derrick Shuda picked up the win in relief, striking out two in 1.2 innings. Eric Froneberger had two hits, including a triple, with three RBIs.

Maiden 10, West Lincoln 2 (Monday) — Brett Huff and Zack Ellis were 2-for-3 in Monday’s loss. West Lincoln (1-3) plays at Cherryville on Friday.

East Gaston 5, Hunter Huss 1 — Shannie McConnell got the win for East Gaston in the first game of the doubleheader. Lindsey Greeson had two hits for the Warriors.

East Gaston 4, Hunter Huss 1 — Olivia Eudy picked up the win. Hayley Black posted two hits and tossed the last two innings. East Gaston (3-0) hosts South Point on Friday.

Forestview 8, Highland Tech 3 — Bailey Stowe posted three hits and five RBIs for Forestview (1-2), while Emily Waugh added two hits and two RBIs. Stephanie Coe got the win for the Jaguars, who host East Lincoln on Thursday. Jessica Smith turned in a solid defensive effort. Chandler Carrigan had three hits for Highland Tech. Megan Owens hit a home run for the Rams.

South Point 24, Vance 0 (3 inn.) — Lindsey Malcolm had a home run for South Point. Kristen McAndrews added one hit for the Red Raiders, who walked 14 times. Taylor Mahaffey tossed a no-hitter in three innings of work, striking out seven of the nine batters she faced. South Point (2-1) travels to East Gaston on Friday.

Burns 17, Ashbrook 2 — Kelsey Tate and Kelsey Carithers had one hit and drove in one run each for Ashbrook (0-3), which travels to Lincolnton on Thursday.

Metrolina Christian 4, Gaston Christian 3 — Hyatt Causby had two hits for Gaston Christian (1-1). Caitlin Campbell got the loss for the Eagles.

Gaston Christian 24, Metrolina Christian 3 (3 inn.) — Sarah Adams (2-for-3) had a home run and a triple in Tuesday’s win. Elanna Freeman (4-for-4), Faith Wilson (3-for-3) and Samantha Mecimore (3-for-3) stood out on offense. Connie Revis got the win and Madison Ramsey also pitched in the win. Gaston Christian (2-0) plays Friday at Northside Christian.

Lincoln Charter 10, Queen’s Grant 5 —Jennifer Allison got her fifth win as the Lady Eagles (5-0) got their second conference win on Tuesday. Kayleigh Mitchell had four RBIs with her first high school grand slam while Victoria Morgan (2-4, two RBI) and Sarah Kenly (3-for-4, RBI) also helped in the win.

Lincoln Charter 22, Lake Norman Charter 1 (Monday) — Sarah Kenley hit for the cycle and provided one of two grand slams in a runaway for Lincoln Charter (4-0). Jada Johnson went 2-for-3 with five RBIs and slugged the other grand slam.

Forestview 1, Nation Ford 0 — Yazmine Hardy scored Forestview’s goal with Hannah Milroy got the assist. Emily Lindsay got the shutout in goal. The Jaguars (4-1) host Hunter Huss on Monday.

Gaston Christian 4, Metrolina Christian 3 — Karis Hoover scored two goals while Morgan Hoffman and Emily McGowan added one apiece for Gaston Christian (1-1), which plays host to Northside Christian on Thursday. Nora Logan scored all three goals for Metrolina Christian (2-1).

Highland Tech 4, Clover 2 — Jason Duarte, Chris Flanagan, Bryan Williams and the doubles team of Brian Iezzi and Jon Alliss picked up wins for Highland Tech. Nick Dehl and J.C. Daugherty got wins for Clover. Highland Tech (2-0) hosts Forestview today.

Varsity boys golf
Highland Tech 292, Kings Mountain 410 — Greg Bunner fired a 68 to claim medalist honors at Woodbridge Golf and Country Club. Houston McCurry fired a 70 for the Rams, while Brayden Hawkins (74), Weston McCurry (80), Robbie Hildebrand (82) and Austin Graves (88) rounded out the team scoring. Kings Mountain was led by Timmie Moore (96) and Stuart Smith (96). Highland Tech hosts South Point on Wednesday at Woodbridge.

Track and field
Emeri Crawford, a shot-putter for the Gastonia Eagles track and field team, recently won a gold medal at the AAU Indoor National Championships at Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Ill. Crawford, a sixth grader at Holbrook Middle School, is undefeated in this event this year.

The 11-member Gastonia Eagles won 14 medals at this national event and continued its five-year winning streak of at least one national championship at the indoor.

Other Gastonia Eagles of note: North Gaston’s Maleena Reid (third, triple jump, third, 55 meters, third, 200 meters, 5th, long jump); Ashbrook’s Jordon Mckoy (third, triple jump, 8th, 800 meters, 18th, 400 meters); Crest’s Kendall Kee (second, 55 meters, ninth, 200 meters); Piedmont Charter’s Johnathan Fox (sixth, shotput,); Friday Middle School’s Asi’ya McCorkle (fourth, 55 meters, sixth, 200 meters); Berry Hill Elementary’s Asia Washington (third, high jump, fourth, 55 meters, 6th 200 meters).

The Gastonia Eagles track and field spring and summer track program starts is open to boys and girls 5-18. Practice and registration will be held on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. until April 23.
