Local sports roundup: HT boys tennis advances to second round of playoffs

Varsity boys tennis
Highland Tech 9, Monroe 0 — Jason Duarte, Chris Flanagan, Jon Alliss, Bryson Beert, Bryan Williams and Thomas Terrio won in singles as Highland Tech advanced to the second round of the 1A dual-team playoffs. The doubles’ teams of Duarte-Flanagan, Beert-Williams and Mitchell Sayasene-Brian Iezzi claimed victories. The Rams (11-4) take on either North Moore or Challenger on May 11.

Varsity golf
Gaston Day’s Archer Price fired a 77 and won the SPAA golf championship on Monday at Rock Barn Golf and Country Club.
Gaston Day finished third in the team scoring at 396. Spencer Thompson (103), Jay Simpson (104), Lukas Stewart (112) and Jay Hixson (117) also competed in the event for the Spartans. United Faith Christian Academy (356) won the team title.

Varsity baseball
Bessemer City 10, Highland Tech 1 — Mason Carter (two hits, two RBIs), Alston Stanley (two hits) and Jeremy Bridges (hit, RBI) led Bessemer City at the plate. Carter picked up the win for Yellow Jackets (11-10, 7-5 Southern Piedmont 1A/2A), who open conference tournament on Thursday.

North Gaston 18, Hunter Huss 0 (five innings) — Zade Denton (four hits), Joseph Laye (two hits, three-run home run, five RBIs), Micah Smith (two hits, two RBIs) and Phillip Potter (two hits, two RBIs) led North Gaston at the plate. Henry Rundio (9-2) tossed a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts. The Wildcats (13-6, 7-4 Big South 3A) host Kings Mountain on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Cherryville 4, East Lincoln 2 — Dylan Hastings got the win, fanning eight batters while Blake Mostetler got the save on Tuesday. Mostetler (2-for-3), Brandon Heavner (2-for-3) and Alex Van Dyke (2-for-3) led the Ironmen (12-7, 8-4) batters.  Jake Carter (2-for-4) led the Mustangs.

Doty, Rhom All-MAC — Gaston Christian’s Ryan Doty and Morgan Rhom were selected to the All-Metrolina Athletic Conference baseball team.

Varsity soccer
Cramerton Christian 5, Sheets Memorial 3 — Christen Page had two goals for Cramerton Christian. Savannah Kettelhut, Hannah Shore and Alena Jenkins had one goal for each for the Crusaders, who claimed a first-round NCCSA 2A playoffs. Heather Engle led the Cramerton Chrisitian (8-2) defense. The Crusaders will play a second-round game on Friday.
Hunter Huss 5, North Gaston 0 — Morgan Rhyne had two goals for Hunter Huss. Jessica Johnson, Melinda Ross and Marcella Montano had one goal each. Casey Lutz and Lisa Shope had one assist each. Montano and Sabrina Price split time in goal for the shutout. The Huskies (4-12, 2-9 Big South 3A) travel to Crest tonight to conclude the regular season.

East Gaston 3, West Mecklenburg 2 — Mandy Ross (assist), Mikayla O’Meara (assist) and Crystal Ocasio had one goal each for East Gaston. Victoria Rivera picked up the win in goal. The Warriors (11-7, 7-4 MEGA 7 4A) travel to Waddell to conclude the regular season on Thursday.

Homan All-Mac — Gaston Christian’s Julie Holman was selected to the All-Metrolina Athletic Conference soccer team.

Varsity softball
Bessemer City 10, Highland Tech 5 — Miranda Barrett got the win, striking out eight batters in the win. Barrett (2-for-4, triple), Tori Stalcup (2-for-4, double) and Laurie Lingafelt  (2-for-4, double) stood out on the BC offense. Yellow Jackets (13-8, 8-6) hosts Lincolnton today.

Kings Mountain 6, South Point 5 (10 innings) — Camille Watson picked up the win and added two hits, including a two-run home run. Caitlynn Brauns also had two hits for the Mountaineers (13-5, 8-3 Big South 3A), who travel to Burns on Thursday in non-conference play.

Gaston Christian 11, Covenant Day 1 — Gaston Christian (12-5) won its opening-round MAC tournament game. Caitlin Campbell got the win, striking out 11 in five innings. Kelsey Burgess (three hits), Shelbie Hall (two hits, two RBIs) and Hyatt Causby (two hits) led the Eagles at the plate. Gaston Christian will take on the Northside/First Assembly winner on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

JV baseball
Ashbrook 8, Crest 7 — Jake Kennington had a walk-off double, scoring Ryan Waters, as Ashbrook erased a 6-0 deficit. Matt Jordan picked up the win for the Green Wave (4-6), who close out the season on Friday at Forestview.

North Gaston 15, Hunter Huss 0 (five innings) — Brett Edwards (four hits, three RBIs), Chantzler Bohanan (three hits, two RBIs), Marcus Broadway (three hits), Nathan Potter (three hits), Jody Baker (two hits, three RBIs) and Andrew Wray (three hits) led North Gaston at the plate. Broadway picked up the win, tossing a perfect game with nine strikeouts. The Wildcats (7-4) host Kings Mountain on Friday.

Middle school soccer
Mount Holly 2, W.C. Friday 1 — Erika Noblett and Emily Lopez  had one goal each for Mount Holly (4-4),which travels to Chavis on Thursday.
