Ashbrook's Boyd advances in three events at state meet
GREENSBORO - Ashbrook junior Jheranie Boyd advanced to the finals in three events at the 4A state track and field championships Saturday.
Boyd qualified in the 100, 200 and 400 meters by placing in the top four of his preliminary heats at North Carolina A&T University.
The top four in each heat qualified for the finals, which were scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
Gaston County will have two other individuals and one relay team in the finals.
Ashbrook's Justin Crawford will compete in the 110 hurdles, East Gaston's La'Creesha Gore will enter the girls 100 and 200 meters, and Ashbrook's team of Boyd, Crawford, Willie Kennedy and Jordan McKoy will compete in the 1600 relay.
Boyd, a football star drawing heavy Division I interest, ran a 10.77 in the 100 for fourth place in his heat. It was the seventh best time overall.
In the 400, he crossed the line in 49.41 seconds for fourth in his heat and fifth overall.
In the 200, he ran a 21.94 for third in his heat and seventh overall.
"I couldn't even catch my breath," Boyd said after running three events with little time in between.
Crawford, also an Ashbrook junior, placed second in his 110 hurdles heat with a time of 14.19 seconds. He had the third best time overall, with the best turned in by Butler senior Spencer Adams at 13.72.
Crawford also entered the 100 meters and 300 hurdles prelims but did not advance. He had a time of 10.85 in the 100 for sixth place in his heat and a time of 40.16 in the 300 hurdles, also for sixth in his heat.
Kennedy, another Ashbrook junior, competed in the 400 prelims but placed seventh in his heat with a time of 52.84.
In girls' competition, Gore advanced in the 100 and 200. She placed fourth in her 100 heat with a time of 12.10 seconds - the eighth-best time overall. In the 200, she was second in her heat and fourth overall with a time of 24.57.
