Area baseball teams learn playoff opponents
Before the release of the state baseball playoff brackets Wednesday, the only uncertainty for local teams had to do with wild-card berths.
Now that the pairings are known, East Gaston appears to have drawn a tough wild-card opponent and Ashbrook earned a wild-card berth it might not want after all.
East Gaston (15-8), the top 4A seed out of the Big South 3A/4A Conference, will open at home Friday against Asheville Reynolds, which comes in with a not-so-shabby 15-8 record.
Ashbrook (12-12) got in the playoffs as a wild card team, but must face the mighty South Caldwell, which boasts a 21-1 record.
Two other Gaston County teams also drew wild-card opponents in the first round. Cherryville, the top 1A seed out of the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A will stay at home to face Mount Airy (7-15). Highland Tech (2-17) will also be at home despite finishing last in the SPC, and will take on East Montgomery (6-17).
Other area teams opening at home Friday include South Point and Forestview in Class 3A and West Lincoln and East Lincoln in 2A.
Hunter Huss, Kings Mountain, Lincolnton and Bessemer City will start on the road.
