Seven turnovers cost Cherryville

HENDERSONVILLE – Cherryville’s miscues on offense did the Ironmen in on Friday night at West Henderson.

They coughed up the ball eight times, losing five, and also had two interceptions in falling to the Falcons 42-21.

Early on the Ironmen (1-2) tied things up at 14-14 after a 51-yard touchdown run by senior fullback Shane Harvell, followed by a nine-yard TD run by senior halfback Alex Burns.

That’s when Kevin Robinson started to bully his way through the Cherryville defense. In the next possession the 5-11, 230-pound wrecking ball touched the ball three times, and on his third touch, went untouched into the end zone from the Ironmen 38. After Sebastien Castellanos’ kick, West took the lead for good at 21-14.

The Falcons’ other big Kevin, Kevin Thomas, then had a 45-yard run with 3:40 left in the half to give West a 28-14 lead.

The Falcons opened the third with a seven-play 60-yard drive, capped by a 44-yard TD pass from Dillon Baker to Aaron Goforth to make it 35-14.

In the final five minutes of the third quarter, Cherryville had two fumbles and lost them both as the game got out of reach.

Robinson powered the Falcon offense with 12 carries for 101 yards, and Thomas was close behind with eight carries for 89 yards and two touchdowns.

Burns led the Ironmen with eight carries for 80 yards and a touchdown.
