Cherryville coach hits 250 wins
In a season of coaching milestones, Cherryville’s Scott Harrill has become the latest to join select company.
With Friday’s 88-55 win over West Lincoln, Harrill recorded his 250th victory, improving his record to 250-75 in 12 seasons with the Ironmen.
“Well, the win was a nice achievement,” Harrill said. “You’re happy when you get to certain areas, but it’s nothing about me. I’ve just been blessed to have all these kids that have played for me.”
Harrill became the 13th coach in county history to reach 250 wins at the varsity level. He ranks second in most coaching wins in school history behind David Watkins, who went 260-156 from the 1984-85 season until he died of cancer during the 2000-01 season.
Cherryville improved to 11-9 overall and 4-6 in the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A Conference with Friday’s win. The Ironmen have four games remaining in the regular season, starting with Tuesday’s trip to East Lincoln.
Earlier in the season, Highland Tech’s Butch Blalock reached 300 career wins and Lincolnton’s Bob Cowie hit the 200-win mark. Also, Forestview boys coach Dan Ghent surpassed 100 wins, as did Bessemer City’s Danny McDowell, whose career includes five seasons at Kings Mountain. Last season, East Gaston’s Ken Howell picked up his 200th career win.
