Gaston Christian opens softball playoffs at home
GASTONIA - Gaston Christian placed third in its conference but earned the No. 2 seed for the 2A state private school softball playoffs, which begin today.
The Eagles (12-5) will open the playoffs at home at 5:30 against seventh-seeded Village Christian (9-4). The eight-team field will be narrowed to four for Friday's semifinals to be held at Fayetteville Christian School in Fayetteville. The championship is set for Saturday at the same site.
Seniors Catherine Jones, Brittany Smith and Mary Christopher lead the Eagles, who finished fifth in the Gazette Softball Slam last month.
"If we come to play ball, we should go a long way," Gaston Christian coach Greg Beckham said.
The Eagles placed third last year, fifth in 2006 and fourth in 2005.
In the NCISAA 1A playoffs, Gaston Day (8-9) received an at-large big and will travel to face top-seeded and defending state champion Wayne Christian (15-2) of Goldsboro today.
