Local playoff roundup: Treffinger, Harkey lead Red Raiders over East Gaston

Varsity baseball
South Point 5, East Gaston 1 — Derek Treffinger slugged a home run for South Point. Darrell Rogers and Patrick Horne had one hit and scored one run each. Chris Harkey tossed four innings and gave up one run with six strikeouts. Logan Walden tossed the last three innings, striking out seven and allowing no hits. J.P. Wiler’s home run accounted for East Gaston’s only run. Brandon Bates took the loss for the Warriors (1-1). South Point (2-0) hosts Clover on Monday at 5 p.m.

Bessemer City 12, Hunter Huss 1 (six innings) — Travis Blake posted a home run for Bessemer City and drove in two runs. Luke Kiser posted two doubles for the Yellow Jackets, while Clayton Johnson slugged a three-run homer. Mason Carter picked up the win for Bessemer City, striking out six and yielding one earned run in four innings. BC (1-1) travels to Forestview today at 1 p.m.

North Gaston 12, Lincolnton 2 (five innings) — Zade Denton posted three hits for North Gaston. Justin Parker added a home run and a double with three RBIs, while Henry Rundio and Brandon Bridges chipped in two hits each. Bridges struck out six in four innings to get the win. The Wildcats (2-0) host Newton-Conover on Tuesday. Lincolnton slipped to 0-3.

Gaston Christian 7, Covenant Day 3 — Aaron Henderson (double, RBI), Taylor Gunn (double, RBI), Morgan Rhom (RBI) and Jordan Doty (double, triple), had two hits each for Gaston Christian. Josh Brooks got the win for the Eagles, while Doty notched the save. Gaston Christian (1-0) hosts Metrolina on Tuesday.

Kings Mountain 6, West Lincoln 3 — Kings Mountain’s Cody Austin hit a three-run home run in the top of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie. Chris Allen picked up the win for the Mountaineers (2-0). Spencer Gardner and Zach Mason singled and scored one run each for West Lincoln. Taylor Braun got the loss for the Rebels. West Lincoln (1-2) hosts Maiden on Monday.

Varsity softball
South Point 10, East Lincoln 0 (six innings) — Jordan Wilson had three hits, including a home run, for South Point. Katie Sneathen also had three hits for the Red Raiders, while Allison Yarbrough added two hits. Taylor Mahaffey picked up the win for South Point, yielding three hits and four walks with 11 strikeouts in six innings. The Red Raiders (1-1) travel to Vance on Tuesday.

Lincoln Charter 9, Lake Norman Charter 2 — Victoria Morgan (two RBIs), Jennifer Allison (triple, RBI), Jada Johnson (RBI) and Amber Gunter had two hits each for Lincoln Charter (3-0). Allison got the win to improve to 3-0.

Chase 11, Kings Mountain 2 — A two-run home run by junior Caroline Chambers gave the Lady Mountaineers a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but KM (0-1) allowed five runs to the Trojans in the home half of the inning. KM trailed by that score until a six-run outburst by Chase in the sixth ended the contest.Tori Glass and Reagan Childers each supplied hits for KM, which plays at North Lincoln next Friday.

Shelby 14, Forestview 13 (13 innings) — D. Brown led the Jaguars with a 4-for-7 day, while M. Delms was 3-for-8.

Varsity soccer

Gaston Day 1, Spartanburg Christian 0 — Sara Bonesteel scored the Spartans’ lone goal while Dorothy Huffstetler had the shutout in goal. Gaston Day (1-0) plays at Oakbrook Prep School on March 18.
Middle school softball

Gaston Christian 25, Covenant Day 0 (three innings) — Samantha Mecimore led Gaston Christian with three hits, including two doubles. Sarah Adams, Alanna Freeman (home run), Faith Wilson (double) had two hits each for the Eagles. Connie Revis got the win for Gaston Christian, yielding just one hit. The Eagles (1-0) takes on Metrolina on Tuesday.
