Softball roundup: Warriors end season, Ironmen advance

May 16, 2008 10:44 pm

MOUNT HOLLY - East Gaston made a living this season with speed on the bases, spectacular pitching, solid defense and timely hitting.

North Davidson turned the tables on Friday.

Hannah Alexander struck out 11 batters and walked none in a complete-game three-hitter as the Knights ended East Gaston's season with a 4-0 win in the second round of the 4A state playoffs.

The Warriors (21-4) committed two errors and came close to scoring only once in the final game of their second straight conference championship season.

"This group of seniors and the underclassman with them have set a new standard at the school. Two straight conference titles and touranments," first-year East Gaston coach Richard Hawley said. "We were pleased with it. This was a good ballclub. We were beat fair and square and that's all you can say about it."

Megan Soots, Tameron Sealey and Blair Collier had singles for East Gaston, which trailed 1-0 entering the final inning. North Davidson then bunched some hits together for a 3-run seventh inning to pull away.

"It was a game of speed," Hawley said. "They (the hits) were all slappers except for three of them."

East Gaston had bases loaded in the third inning but couldn't move the runners forward. With two outs, Cameron Sealey hit a hard shot to the third baseman, whose throw to first barely beat Sealey, wiping out a possible run.

Michelle Primm struck out three batters but walked three and surrendered six hits in the loss.

North Davidson (24-3) moves on to the third round, where it will face Hopewell (22-3), a 4-0 winner over Weddington.

T.C. Roberson 4, Kings Mountain 0 - For six innings, Kings Mountain kept alive the possibility of a big upset but T.C. Roberson eventually proved too strong in the second round of the 3A state playoffs.

The Lady Mountaineers, who completed a 15-9 season, trailed only 1-0 in the sixth before the host Lady Rams (21-2) pulled away. Kings Mountain managed only two hits with Taylor Faris and Kelisha Goodson the only batters to reach safely.

Jordan Childers struck out two with two walks while surrendering nine hits to the T.C. Roberson lineup.

Ashe County 1, West Lincoln 0 - Visiting Ashe County won in extra innings to advance to the third round of the 2A state playoffs. Ashe (11-8) was the third seed out of the Mountain Valley Conference. West Lincoln, the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A Conference's top 2A seed, ends its season at 16-7.

Cherryville 8, Rosman 1 - Cherryville kept its season alive with a home win Tuesday, climbing within two wins of a state championship series appearance.

Game details were not available.

Cherryville (20-5) will again play at home in the third round Tuesday, when it will face Swain County (23-2), a 24-1 winner Avery. Swain County is the top seed out of the Smoky Mountain Conference.
