South Point's Cala is the state 3A champion
After the North Carolina State High School Athletic Association Wrestling Championships on Feb. 22-23, only two freshmen can now call themselves ‘state champions.' One of them is Dylan Cala, the 125-pound 3A champion from South Point High School.
"It feels pretty good. It's something I've been wanting since I was about eight," said Cala, who is currently 14 years old.
Cala won the state finals, defeating Enka's Daniel Owenby by a decision of 5-4. Owenby had an impressive 59-1 overall record going into the match, while Cala sported an equally impressive 47-1 record.
Cala also wrestles during the off-season with East Gaston, doing Freestyle and Greco. Last year, he competed in the ASICS Kids Freestyle and Greco-Roman National Championships, finishing second in Greco and third in freestyle.
Cala's hoping to repeat the strong showing in nationals, but he's also moving up an age division. The difference and body tones and strength could be a challenge for Cala, but he's still shooting for a first place finish.
East Gaston coach Scott Goins claims Cala's success comes from his work ethic.
"He loves the grind. A lot of kids like the competition, but they don't like to work. He doesn't mind going in and training hard," said Goins.
For Cala, he's hoping that his success on the mat will earn him a scholarship to a good Division 1 university.
"He's a hard worker, and I look for big things out of him in the future. I think he has potential to be a four timer," said Goins.
The only other freshman who has the opportunity to be a four-time state champion in North Carolina is Benjamin Creed, who won the 103 weight class in 4A for Cary High School.
