3A West track: North Gaston's Reid wins two titles
Four individuals and one relay team from Gaston County won championships at the 3A West regional track and field meet Saturday
North Gaston senior Maleena Reid swept the 100 and 200 meters, Ashbrook freshman Destinie Sykes won the 300-meter hurdles, Forestview’s Tatyana Brewton took first in the 100 hurdles and Forestview’s Catherine Crawford won the 400 meters. Forestview’s 400-meter relay team also took home a gold medal.
Although Ashbrook had only one individual champion, the Green Wave accrued enough points elsewhere to finish third in the girls team standings. Ashbrook scored 70 points, finishing three behind second-place Waynesville Tuscola. North Buncombe easily won the team title.
On the boys’ side, no Gaston County athlete won an event, but the Big South 3A Conference performed well as a whole with Crest finishing second, Kings Mountain third and Forestview fourth in the team standings. Asheville won the team title.
