Kings Mountain soccer falls in second round

KINGS MOUNTAIN – Despite a phenomenal last game by Gardner-Webb recruit Meagan Reynolds, a productive year for Kings Mountain came to an abrupt end on Friday night with a 4-3 loss to Hickory in the second round of the 3A state playoffs.

After waiting for more than 90 minutes to begin the game due to officiating issues, the Mountaineers came out hitting on all cylinders. Reynolds scored two of her three goals on the night within the first 30 minutes to give Kings Mountain a 2-0 lead at the half.

But the Red Tornadoes came storming back, as Danielle Grant and Sarah Henson each scored a goal within 10 minutes of the second half to tie the game. Reynolds responded by recording her hat trick off of a free kick from roughly 40 yards out.

However, the Tornadoes offense had awoken and Jackie Lamboy went on to score two more goals (including one off a header against replacement keeper Mary Pasour).

Senior Heather Stevens recorded 16 saves in goal for Kings Mountain, which finished the season with a 16-7 record. Joining Reynolds and Stevens as graduating seniors are Chelsea Champion (Southern Wesleyan), Ramey Kerns (Eastern Tennessee State), Megan Loftin (Gardner-Webb), Courtneigh Bumgardner, Mallory Mansfield, Erica Moore and Taylor Neisler.
