KM tops Bulldogs, 3-1 in SWC battle

High School volleyball

KINGS MOUNTAIN — After falling behind 1-0 to Burns, Kings Mountain’s volleyball team recovered to win three straight games and remained unbeaten in Southwestern 2A/3A Conference play.

Game scores: 25-27, 25-8, 25-18, 25-17

Records: Kings Mountain 8-2 overall, 5-0 SWC; Burns 7-3 overall, 4-1 SWC

Leading the way: Kings Mountain’s Marshia Meeks drilled 12 kills and a season-high 11 aces, while Chasiti Falls dished out 18 assists. The Mountaineers’ Hayley Hoyle had 15 digs as Dymon Adams had seven digs.

Burns’ Emily Mellon finished with four kills and four digs, while Stephanie Moore and Taylor Pharr contributed four digs each. Kelsey Alcide went 16-of-16 from the service line.

From the coaches: “We had a tough week last week, and we thought we needed to relay a message to our starters, so we got some other people some playing time (in the first set).

I was very pleased with how our reserves played that first game. I thought the girls responded well,” Kings Mountain coach Brian Grant said.

“The girls have put in so much hard work. We’ve been non-stop every day. From being last in the conference to being No. 2 this year says a lot. I think we earned some respect today because we’re usually in-and-out of here fast,” Burns coach Veronica Spikes said.

Next: Both teams return to action Thursday as Burns visits rival Shelby, while Kings Mountain travels to Chase.
