Prep notebook: Forestview sets school record in Ashbrook rout
Comments 0 | Recommend 0GASTONIA — Forestview admittedly was gunning for the century mark late in Friday’s 96-49 win over Ashbrook.
Although the Jaguars came up four points short, they still wound up with a school record for highest total in a game. Forestview topped the 94 points scored against Gaston Christian Dec. 29, 2004.
Six players scored in double figures, including three off the bench. The Forestview bench outscored Ashbrook’s full team 50-49.
“We haven’t had a whole lot of games where the reserves got to play as much as they played in this one,” Forestview coach Dan Ghent said. “They got to show what they can do. We’ve got a very good group of second-teamers.”
Forestview led 27-12 at the end of the first quarter, 50-23 at the half and 74-35 entering the fourth quarter. The Jaguars hit 90 midway through the fourth.
“We weren’t going to hold the ball, that’s for sure,” Ghent said.
Forestview (12-7, 9-1 Big South) can force a first-place tie in the Big South with a win at Hunter Huss on Tuesday.
Seeking perfection
Forestview’s girls need two more wins to secure their third straight undefeated conference title. The Jaguars (17-2, 10-0 Big South) travel to Hunter Huss on Tuesday and play host to Kings Mountain on Friday.
“Going undefeated in the conference is a challenge because I feel like we get everybody’s best shot,” Forestview coach Ken Beaty said.
The Jaguars went 12-0 each of the past two seasons and have won 40 straight regular-season conference games dating to the 2006-07 season, when they shared the Big South title with East Gaston.
Ironmen a win away
With a two-game lead atop the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A Conference, Cherryville needs one win to clinch its fifth regular-season conference title in seven years. The Ironmen (16-2, 10-1) travel to Lincolnton Tuesday, visit Hickory Challenger on Wednesday, then close the regular season Friday at home against Highland Tech.
In the past six years, Cherryville has won conference titles in 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008.
Tight SPC girls race
The SPC girls title looks like it will go down to the wire as front-runners North Lincoln (11-0) and East Lincoln (11-1) meet Friday in Denver in the regular-season finale for both teams. North Lincoln won the first meeting 60-59.
While East Lincoln has won numerous conference titles, most recently in 2008, North Lincoln has never won a regular-season crown. The Knights, however, did beat Draughn 72-70 for the SPC tournament championship last year.
