Rebels' season comes to wild end

May 16, 2008 11:21 pm

VALE - West Lincoln left bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh and ended its season with a 5-4 home loss to Ledford on Friday.

Ricky Vaughn struck out 14 in the complete-game win for Ledford (23-7). In fact, he recorded strikeouts for his final seven putouts to stave off a late West Lincoln charge.

Jake Watts drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the seventh to load the bases after Chris Heafner walked and Ethan Beck singled. But Vaughn struck out Korey Martin on a 3-2 pitch to end the threat.

Trey Drewery's two-run double highlighted West Lincoln's three-run first inning.

The Rebels should have scored an additional run in the fourth.

West Lincoln's Chris Heafner slugged what would have been a two-run homer in the fourth but Chris Taylor, on base at the time, took off his helmet between third and home and was tossed from the game. His run was nullified.

The Rebels end their conference championship season with an 18-10 record.

Ledford (23-7) advances to face Starmount (16-9), a 4-3 winner over Surry Central and the top seed out of the Mountain Valley Conference.
