Local sports roundup: Middle school softball teams open seasons

Middle school softball
W.C. Friday 15, Cramerton 10 —
Leading hitters for W.C. Friday (1-0) with two hits apiece were Emily Gibson, Lauren Smith and Kaycee Bradley. Caroline Holland was the winning pitcher. J. Williams had two singles to lead Cramerton (0-1). Friday hosts Bessemer City on Tuesday, while Cramerton will host Chavis.
Belmont 6, Mount Holly 3 — Arlyn Locklear and Allison Moody led Belmont at the plate. Morgan Mahaffey struck out six and collected the win. Belmont (1-0) travels to Grier on Tuesday.
Southwest 19, York Chester 2 — Callie Hatley struck out four in two innings and got the win. Morgan Fender struck out four in two innings and scored four runs. Hannah Patton and Madison Meadows stood out defensively for the Road Runners (1-0), who host Holbrook on Thursday.

Holbrook 18, Bessemer City 9 - Marah Branham had four hits, while Madison Armstrong and Conner McCuen added three hits each. Brezzy Davis got the win for Holbrook (1-0), which hosts York Chester on Tuesday.

Kings Mountain 3, South Point 0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-16) —
Kings Mountain (4-3 overall, 1-0 conference) was led by Nicole Ford’s eight kills, Caylin Hughes’ 14 assists, Sarah Sedyschyn’s five aces, Morgan Robinson’s two blocks and Tori Glass’ five digs. Kings Mountain hosts Nation Ford (S.C.) on Tuesday.
North Gaston 3, Hunter Huss 0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-10) — Taylor Schultz set the pace at the service line with eight aces. Ashley Almond contributed four aces and 17 assists. Jordan Mackey and Olivia Denton had seven kills each, while Caitlin Rubow added four kills and two aces. North Gaston (5-1, 1-0 Big South) hosts Ashbrook on Tuesday.

Gaston Day 0, Carolina Day 0 —
Grant Boloyan had his third shutout of the year for the Spartans (4-3-1).  Gaston Day’s next game will be on Wednesday at Spartanburg Day.JV football
Ashbrook 34, Shelby 0 — The visiting Ashbrook Green Wave rolled past the junior Golden Lions Thursday night as Tre Brice ran for a touchdown and threw for another.  Marcus James, who caught Brice’s scoring pass, also had two rushing touchdowns for the Green Wave. Deshawn Davis added a touchdown run for Ashbrook. Demetradus June kicked two points after and Brice passed to Luke Pauley for a two-point conversion. Ashbrook (1-1) hosts South Caldwell next Thursday.
Kings Mountain 22, Burns 0 — The host Mountaineers captured their first win of the season against county rival Burns at John Gamble Stadium. Jonathan Clark, Phillip Quinn and Dashon Guest scored touchdowns for the victors. Clark passed to Quinn for a two-point conversion and the defense produced a safety to complete the scoring. The Kings Mountain JV defense was sparked in the shutout by Van Roberts’ interception plus the play of Curtis McNamara and Josh Miller.

North Gaston 2, Hunter Huss 0 (25-14, 25-17) —
Zia Gray had two kills, three aces and nine assists. Salina Diaz contributed six aces and six kills while Jamey Staley and Madison Roseberry added two kills apiece. North Gaston (6-0, 1-0 Big South) hosts Ashbrook on Tuesday.
South Point 2, Kings Mountain 1 (30-28, 22-25, 25-14)

Women’s college soccer
Belmont Abbey 1, Catawba 0 —
Belmont Abbey junior forward Rebecca Mateo scored the only goal of the match in the 108th minute of double overtime in the 2010 season opener. Freshman Emily Archer registered the assist. Senior goalkeeper Anna Donaldson collected four saves in the net. The Abbey is back in action Saturday when it remains on the road with a tilt against North Georgia.
