South Point game postponed again, series moves to Belmont
Game 1 (Thursday): South Point 4, Marvin Ridge 3
Game 2: 4 p.m. Saturday at South Point
Game 3 (if necessary): 7 p.m. Saturday at South Point
Game 2 of South Point’s best-of-three 3A West Regional championship series with Marvin Ridge was postponed Saturday for the second time after Marvin Ridge couldn’t get its water-logged field ready for a noon first pitch.
The game was rescheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday at South Point. If Marvin Ridge wins and forces a Game 3, it would begin at 7 p.m. at South Point, meaning Marvin Ridge has forfeited its right to a home game in series.
Game 2 w as originally scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday but was postponed a day after lightning struck nearby. The game couldn’t begin much later because Marvin Ridge’s stadium has no lights, forcing the immediate switch to Saturday.
South Point (24-2) beat the Mavericks (19-10) 4-3 in Game 1 Thursday in Belmont. The series winner will face Northeast Guilford in the state championship series next weekend at Five County Stadium in Zebulon or N.C. State’s Doak Field in Raleigh.
South Point is trying to reach the state finals for the first time since finishing 3A state runner-up in 1994. The Red Raiders won the 3A state championship in 1981. South Point previously won back-to-back titles in the old Western N.C. Activities Association in 1973 and 1974 and finished WNCHSAA runner-up in 1977.
