ALBEMARLE - Highland Tech's first dual-team tennis victory in school history wasn't even close.
Rob Stover, Peter Terrio, Chris Flanagan, James Collier and Brendon Withers won their singles matches as the Rams dispatched Albemarle 5-1 on Tuesday.


Doubles matches weren't necessary, as Highland Tech (10-5) had already ensured victory and a trip to the second round on Tuesday. The Rams will travel to face Northwest No. 1 seed Mt. Airy, an 8-1 winner over East Mongomery.


Before the next dual-team match, however, Highland Tech will host the 1A West individual regional Friday at the Bradley Center. Stover and Terrio will put their 10-2 doubles on the line as Highland Tech's lone representatives while Cherryville's Spencer Lockridge will enter the singles competition.


*North Buncombe 5, Kings Mountain 1 - Matt Gray won the only match for Kings Mountain (13-6), in a loss in the first round of dual team playoffs. On a high note, Kings Mountain's Felix Schroder qualified for the Western 3A Regional Tournament, which begins Friday at Mooresville.

*Watagua 8, Ashbrook 1 - In the first round of dual team playoffs, Chris Saville won the Green Wave's lone match. Ashbrook finished the season 11-6.

 

Varsity softball
*Gaston Day 15, Victory Christian 2 (5 innings) - Samantha Parton struck out eight batters and allowed one hit in four innings for the win, and Parton also went 3-for-4 from the plate with a home run. Sara Noblett also hit a homer and batted in three runs to lead Gaston Day (8-8), who will play at the Hornet's Nest against Southlake Christian on Thursday for the SPAA Conference Tournament Championship.

*South Iredell 10, Bessemer City 0 - South Iredell scored all of its runs in the first inning of the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A Conference game.

*Cherryville 4, West Lincoln 1 - Sarah Teague had three hits, and Emily Self (16-5) scattered five hits to pick up the win from the mound for Cherryville (17-5, 11-2), who will travel on Thursday to Bessemer City.

 

JV baseball
*Ashbrook 16, North Lincoln 9
- Justin Shempert was the winning pitcher, and John McCuen, Carson Dixon, and Jordan Frazier each had three hits to lead Ashbrook, who finished the season with a 12-8 overall record.

Middle school baseball
*Grier 15, Holbrook 0 (5 Innings) - Zack Hatley recorded the win and threw nine strikeouts, Taylor Adams hit 3-for-4, and Nate Buchanan also went 2-for-2 to lead Grier (8-0), who will travel on Thursday to Belmont.

 

Middle school soccer
*Grier 4, Holbrook 0
- Pheirica Gardin scored two goals, and Lauren Smith and Clare Dotts each added one more for Grier (8-0), who will travel on Thursday to Belmont.

 

Hole-in-one
*Gastonia's Denny Dockery had his third ace on May 2 at Gastonia Municipal Golf Course. Dockery used an 8-iron from 120 yards out on No. 17 hole. Scott Denton, Dune Dover, David Watts and James Bates witnessed the event.
