Ashbrook, Forestview vie for Cup title
At Poston Park, Lowell
Fifth-place game: Highland Tech vs. East Gaston, 2 p.m.
Third-place game: Hunter Huss vs. Gaston Day, 4 p.m.
Championship: Forestview vs. Ashbrook 6 p.m.
The Gazette Cup has been around 19 years, and no two teams have reached the championship match more than Ashbrook and Forestview.
The Gastonia rivals will square off for a record ninth time in the title round 6 p.m. Saturday at Poston Park in Lowell.
Ashbrook has advanced to the title game 16 times — more than any other team — and will seek its third Cup. Forestview, tied with South Point for most Cup titles at eight, will be making its 12th championship appearance and first since 2009.
“It’s nice for the guys to get back into it because last year we did go 2-0 (in group play) but didn’t get the opportunity to play because of the points system,” Jaguars coach Trey McKeown said.
Ashbrook’s program will be split between the Gazette Cup and the Cure for Cancer tournament in Charlotte, where the Green Wave also has a 6 p.m. match. Head coach Joel Webb said he will attend the Gazette Cup while Ray Cloyd will coach the team in Charlotte.
With a roster of 42 players, the Green Wave has a unique ability to compete in two tournaments simultaneously. Webb said the coaches would discuss over the past two days which players to assign to each tournament.
“The boys just love playing. It doesn’t matter where they play,” Webb said. “They just want to play.”
Ashbrook is looking for its first Cup title since 2008. Defending champion South Point did not enter this year’s tournament.
