NOTEBOOK: SPC sets volleyball tournament
Seedings were set Saturday for this week’s Southern Piedmont 1A/2A Conference volleyball tournament.
Regular-season champion Lake Norman Charter earned the top seed for the tournament and will face No. 8 seed Highland Tech in the first round. Other first-round matchups include No. 2 seed North Lincoln vs. No. 7 seed Bessemer City, No. 3 seed Cherryville vs. No. 6 seed Lincolnton and No. 4 seed East Lincoln against No. 5 seed West Lincoln.
The tournament runs Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with game times at 5 p.m. and higher seeds hosting throughout.
No tennis conclusion
The Big South 3A Conference will not resume its individual girls tennis tournament Monday as originally reported. The semifinals and finals were rained out Thursday. On Wednesday, the conference had already determined its qualifiers for 3A West regional scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Morganton Patton.
The singles qualifiers are Crest’s Amy Burch, South Point’s Kelli Patz, Kings Mountain’s Amanda Rithiphong and South Point’s Madeline Killen. The doubles qualifiers are Forestview’s Kaelan and Kady Forbes, Crest’s Victoria and Jordyn Powell, South Point’s Kristin Rivera and Morgan Jones, and Ashbrook’s Claudia Steffey and Hope McIntosh.
Cross country championships
Ashbrook will host the Big South 3A Conference cross country championships Tuesday, starting at 4 p.m. for the boys and 4:30 for the girls.
Vincent Comesana won the Gaston County championship earlier this season, leading Forestview to the team title. Ashbrook ran away with the girls county title, led by individual runner-up Rachael Lee, who was the top Big South Conference finisher in that race.
Big South golf to wrap up
The Big South 3A Conference will hold its final girls golf match of the season 3 p.m. Monday at Woodbridge in Kings Mountain. The final round will consist of nine holes.
Madi Cauble of South Point leads the individual standings by two strokes over Jamie Barnes of Crest and four shots over South Point teammate Katie Barnette.
South Point leads the team standings by 51 strokes over Forestview and 57 over Crest.
A number of Big South golfers have already qualified for the regional. To qualify, a golfer must shoot a verified 55 or better in a conference match.
