Forestview leads Wells Fargo standings

CHAPEL HILL — Forestview, Lake Norman Charter and Charlotte Catholic lead their respective Wells Fargo Conference Cup standings, released Tuesday by the N.C. High School Athletic Association.

The Wells Fargo Conference Cup is based on how schools perform in conference competition only and does not factor in state playoff competition. In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points.

Forestview leads the Big South 3A standings with 75.5 points through the fall season after winning championships in boys cross country and girls tennis. League titles in football and girls golf put South Point in second place with 71 points. Ashbrook (69) is a close third thanks in part to a first-place finish in girls cross country. Full standings: Forestview 75.5, South Point 71, Ashbrook 69, Kings Mountain 64, Crest 62, North Gaston 38.5, Hunter Huss 29.

In the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A Conference, first-year member Lake Norman Charter (77 points) edged East Lincoln (75) for the top spot through the fall season after winning league titles in volleyball, girls tennis and girls golf. East Lincoln won the SPC championship in boys soccer. North Lincoln (69) is a close third, followed by Lincolnton (66). Full standings: Lake Norman Charter 77, East Lincoln 75, North Lincoln 69, Lincolnton 66, Highland Tech 52, Cherryville 51, West Lincoln 51, Bessemer City 25.

In the MEGA 7 3A/4A Conference, Charlotte Catholic won league titles in volleyball, girls tennis, football and boys soccer to take the Wells Fargo Conference Cup lead with 47 points. Olympic is second with 40 points after finishing first in girls golf and second in boys soccer and football. A second-place finish in girls golf helped East Gaston to third place in the Wells Fargo standings with 31.5 points. Full standings: Charlotte Catholic 47, Olympic 40, East Gaston 31.5, West Mecklenburg 22, Berry 20.5, Harding 14, Garinger 7.
