Local sports roundup: Jesse Grigg wins top wrestling regional honor

*East Gaston’s Jesse Grigg (135) and his brother, Josh (119), took first in the 3A West Regional in Charlotte. Jesse Grigg was also named most outstanding wrestler for the meet. Drake Fortner (145) finished third for the Warriors.
*Ashbrook finished sixth at the 3A West regionals Saturday in Hickory with South Point (15th, 41), Hunter Huss (16th, 40.5), North Gaston (19th, 30.2), Kings Mountain (21st, 15) and Forestview (23rd, 7).
Ashbrook’s Josh Smith (103 pounds) took first in his weight class to qualify for state. Ali Charles (135) and Chase Warren (189) of Ashbrook took second while Hunter Dunn (South Point, 103), Darius Stocks (Hunter Huss, 125), Hunter Huss’ Cody Hendren (160) and Michael Dotterer (Ashbrook, 215) finished third in their matches. Brandon Cagle (South Point, 119), Ashlee Davis (fourth, 125) and Inigo Hughes (North Gaston, 189) took fourth.
*Host team West Lincoln finished tied for first with Newton Conover in the 2A West regional.
North Lincoln (11th, 61) and Lincolnton (12th,56), East Lincoln (14th, 45.5) also fared well at the regional. Lincolnton’s Gene Goodson (160) finished first along with Nate Smith (North Lincoln, 119), Jake Nelson (North Lincoln, 130), West Lincoln’s Glen Self (171), Jordan Handy (140), Taylor Barber (145). West Lincoln’s John Navey (189) finished second with teammate Chad Stamey while David Sailors (125) of West Lincoln finished third. Ty Conant of West Lincoln and Emory Greer of Lincolnton placed fourth.
Varsity girls basketball
*Cramerton Christian 40, Neuse Christian 18 — Laura Livingston and Jessi Hargett had 11 points each in the win. The Crusaders won the consolation game of the state tournament to finish their season at 20-2 on Saturday.
*Rockwell 39, Cramerton Christian 28 (Friday) — Hargett (seven points) led the Crusaders. Rockwell went on to win the state championship.
